The Last Best Place

Jeff and I finally made it up to Montana at the beginning of the month and we couldn't be more excited. Montana is truly the last of the frontier, and we're loving every square inch of it. We're about 39 miles away from the big city and about 14 miles from the nearest grocery store. It's so exciting to be able to walk out the door and see tons of deer, elk and big horned sheep and the scenery is amazing. So this is a picture of where we live. We're staying in the employee housing, which is a hotel that they have redecorated. Fortunately, after meeting Jeff they let us have the handicapped room so we have a little extra space, but basically we have a studio apartment with no kitchen. We live off a lot of microwavable food and boxed mac and cheese. That makes me sad cause I love cooking and I'm not half bad. Anyway, I put an arrow pointing to where the hotel is. Across the street is a gas station and a weigh station/rest stop. Jeff and I hiked up this hill one night after work just for kicks and giggles.
This guy is a white tailed deer. I've probably seen about 15,000 of them in the last two weeks. They're fun to chase. There are also mule deer out here but not as many... and we've been hearing every one's stories about bears and mountain lions. Rumor has it that there are a lot of them out here, as well as a pack of wolves that roam pretty close to here.
This is a herd of elk that we watched for a while, there are TONS of them out here. And usually when you drive in from town you'll run into this herd of big horns that live by the highway. It's pretty exciting.
And for those of you who forgot why we moved out here for the summer, it's because we're getting paid to do this: ... plus rafting, hiking, and mountain biking. It's a tough job, but someones got to do it.
