.:Fashion Crimes:.

I was listening to a speaker in church today discuss ways to keep the Sabbath day holy and something they said caught my ear. I didn't hear everything that was said because I was busy texting a couple friends and trying to take Jeff's blackberry away so I could play Brick Break. I haven't gotten past level 7.
Anyway, they made a comment about dressing appropriately for church. "Dressing flashy is as bad as dressing immodestly." I guess some people find it distracting if you wear snake skin boots and a big hat? All I know is that I asked Jeff after we left church what some of the people we talked to today were wearing and he had NO idea. "Dresses I guess? A blue tie?" WRONG! Skirt and shirt and a .... black tie? Wait, blue?? I don't know-I didn't .. notice I guess. And maybe I'm gettin their sentence all wrong, but it got me thinking. Now, I'm not the fashion queen or anything, but neither do I show up at church in flip flops and a potato sack. However, I think it's OK to dress fashionably as long as your modest, no? I love it when people can be trendy and modest, it's like an "Up yours!!" to the fashion world. In fact, I think it's good for people to dress attractively. It makes you feel better about yourself (not that that should be the only source of your self esteem), which will make you treat yourself better and hopefully behave better. Every president at BYU-Idaho has encouraged students to dress smart and attractively for those very reasons. So, I say if you find a modest pink and white zebra print dress with a leopard belt you should pair it with neon heels and wear it with pride.
Just thought I'd throw this out there... what do you think? And if you're in my ward I hope you were listening! Haha..

Love Anna

And I was just kidding.. I listened to the whole sacrament meeting, we had great speakers...

Glad to hear you were listening! I hope to see you in church in that exact outfit next week, I love the socks and neon pumps combo.

I once had a pair of hotpink fishnet stockings at the checkout of a store but thought better of it at the last second. Or I probably just chickened out.

So... is there something wrong with wearing flip flops? A week never goes by with out the two of us wearing our Chaco’s- but we already live in hell so I am not worried.

i think there is nothing wrong in dressing fashonably and being modest at the same time. i mean even as a missionary they encouraged us to wear make up andlook nice and presentable....though most days it was hard too :) i think people tend to take people more seriously and respect them more if they are dressed nicely. tough i don't think we need to go into debt to dress fashionably.....

Very funny! I'm with you; why not try and look your best??

It's not if it is distracting to others but whether it is a distraction to yourself. If you are wearing that leopard print, feeling great about yourself, and paying attention then go for it. If you are wearing the leopard print and sit there wondering how many people are noticing you then you should probably leave it in your closet. I personally think it's all about whether you are adult enough to wear it or if you have a high school mentality about it.

I think every congregation has their share of kooks, door-to-door salesmen, insurance guys, and mentally ill.

Wow. That was redundant.

Wow, imagine my shock when I read this post and found out that I am now the "ward kook". I really feel like you MISSED the point. Here is the quote as given in the article taken directly from the Liahona... "For some, the “best” clothes to wear on Sunday are simply the cleanest, best-repaired clothes they have. The important thing is that the clothes are neat, clean, and contribute to the spirit of the Sabbath; extravagant, showy clothes can detract almost as much as dirty or immodest clothes can."

As mentioned before this quote is not my own personal interpertation of the gospel. I am one hundred percent a supporter of people dressing fashionably and modestly at the same time.

Just want to thank you for the big welcome to ward post. Sadly, you missed the whole point of my talk.

Sorry about my previous comment. I should not have written anything with my emotions running so high. I had just cleaned out my purse and found the paper you wrote down your and a few other blogs for me and thought I'd check them out. I'm not going to lie, the post and a few comments definately hurt my feelings. What you gained from my talk is none of my business. Sorry again.

haha Nataley!!! I actually was listening, it's just not funny to say, "While I was sittin in church listening attentively.." :) It was a good talk, too... about keeping the sabbath holy, which is why I was trying to take Jeff's phone away-he was yet again beating brick breaker during church. I've decided I'll never get good at that game.
