And what would a visit to Utah be without family? Jeff and I stopped to visit Tyler and Bregelle. It was a blast to see them again and visit their new apartment. They just moved down there this summer, and already Bregelle got her art in a gallery in Park City. How nifty is that!
After that we said our farewells to Utah and we hurried (at 55 mph-the trailer is heavy!) down to Phoenix to visit our awesome friends Ben and Julia. So here we are, kicking it in Arizona and lo and behold! Julia discovers a demolition derby. Besides apple pie and popcorn, I can not imagine anything more American than taking perfectly useful vehicles and crashing them into each other for pure entertainment. Yes, we know there are starving children in Africa but we have lots of gas and old cars to dispose of! The best part was being so close that when the cars would get stuck in the muck the tire would flip mud and goo all down our shirts.
Nice.
There is something exciting, thrilling and fascinating about watching cars crash into each other. I think there is a secret desire from the redneck in us all for something to explode or catch fire hard core. And not to disappoint, our derby pleased the crowd with plenty of crash and a fire or two. It was spectacular! And as if it weren't enough to destroy 20 cars, they grabbed two cotton pickin machines and crashed them into each other til the claws fell off. I suppose that was about $500,000 worth of entertainment.
On a scale of 1-10, demolition derbies have about a 9 on the fun factor. We highly recommend it.
