Flying Squirrels

Jeff and I are now the proud parents to two little Sugar Gliders!!!! They're tiny little marsupials (meaning, they have pouches and their babies are called Joey's...), but I prefer to call them flying squirrels because no one knows what a glider is. Sugar Gliders come from Australia orginally, so Jeff decided we should name them Steve and Bindi, after the Irwin family. (As I write this I currently have a squirrel sitting on the computer plug, precariously hanging by his paws and staring at me. Probably wondering what Jeff is watching on TV, cause heaven knows I can't figure it out. And now he is inside my glass drinking the last sip of eggnog. )

But anyway, Jeff got me them for my birthday (which isn't til this Wednesday) (you still have time to shop) a couple weeks ago, and we love them. Tyler and Bregelle were over when we got them and we played with them for an hour. They really liked all the attention, especially from Tyler. It seems like animals are naturally attracted to him. ... haha.. I just thought of something funny but I'm not going to say it :) The guy who sold them to us warned us that they would about once a month chew through their mesh cage (which is 6.5" tall and pretty wide) and run around the house. Sure enough, that first night after we got done playing with them I woke up to a crash in the other room. I thought that had just knocked over their bowls but then a min later I saw the silouette of a squirrel on my window sill, running around and knocking the little stuff off. So, I promptly woke up Jeff and he helped me catch her. I then had to find our other one, which was under the stove. I had to bribe him out with a grape. So Jeff groggily taped up the hole halfway. I said, "Uh, honey you need to do it a little more they can still get out." He grumbled back that it was fine and we went back to bed-famous last words! Four hours later he woke up to a squirrel on his face and we had to do it all over again.

These little guys are bundles of fun. Usually we try to rouse them about 9pm so we can play with them a little before we go to bed, but they are worse than trying to drag Katie out of bed for seminary. They'll wrap their tails around their faces so they can try to ignore you, and even then when you get them out of their little box they're only awake enough til they can find they're little fleece bag or a hoodie to climb in and go back to sleep for ten hours more. I swear they are only awake 4 hours out of the day. I actually like it when they're only half awake cause then you can actually see them. Once they're fully awake they're like a raquet ball on speed, they never stop running, jumping and trying to make it down the hallway into the other rooms. We only let them play out of their cage when we are up, and we don't want them where we can't see them. Well, I'm going to go join Jeff and the squirrels as they read at the table.

Oh! We're bringin them to Texas with us-and they're going to stay in Dad's room! BUAHAHA!
