High School

For those of you who don't know, I've decided to substitute teach while Jeff is getting his business going. That way I can pick the days I work and how often I go in and still be able to help Jeff if he needs it. It's a little something to keep me occupied so I don't turn into a soap opera following truffle popping goon.
Anyway, today I'm at one of the high schools in my area. Can we just say, Wow? I'm amused at some of the outfits these kids come up with! One girl was wearing diamond fish net stockings, running shorts, a button up shirt with a vest thinger over it and a feather boa. It was pretty impressive, at first I thought it was a costume before I realized she was serious. Another girl was wearing leggings, running shorts, knee high socks, keds and a very dressy shirt. It was definitely interesting. I honestly loved it though, you need a little color in life. I just wonder what made them put those particular things together and go, "Yes. All these items should be worn together and to school!" The teacher left me a note saying to expect one particular class to be very loud, so I was prepared. I let them talk a little to settle down and then explained what they were supposed to do .. and then after that they decided to keep talking and not listen .. so I pulled out my "I haven't given a referral out in about an hour. I was hoping to make it to two." line. Some of the kids were shocked-"Wow! Most teachers say it's been over a year!!!" "Seriously? Are you serious?" And then they shut up. Little do they know that I have never written one. I was nervous for a minute because I thought they would call my bluff, but *phew* they all quieted down. I've also decided that I like high school better than most other grade levels. The kids are more mature, they listen, and most of them are willing to do what is asked. I will say though that the profanity and other questionable behavior is a lot higher. I don't think the girls in the lunch line (Yes, I was the cool teacher in the lunch line because I forgot my lunch... ) knew I was a "grown up" and were having quite the conversation. "So then like they were doing drugs and #$% and I was like 'You #$%$# mother @#%$#!' And they were all drinking and like blahblahblah @#%!!! Blah!!!" That cute little angelic looking blond girl and her cute little friend probably dropped more F-bombs in one sentence than I did in all of my high school career. I love this job. Kids amuse me, it's easy and I like to make sure I'm still "Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.."

You are a brave, brave soul. I am working with 4th graders...high schoolers still scare me quite a bit!

High schoolers are crazier these days than they used to be, I think?/! The outfits now are so weird. I must agree- what are they thinking sometimes? I'm glad you like your job. You are a great one to work with that age group.

So next time you see a toddler in the grocery store and you laugh to yourself cause you know the mom didn't want to battle it out on the outfit for the day.... you can think about the poor moms of all those high school girls...

Unfortunately some girls don't growm out of BAD style.

That's awesome that you're subbing. I hope the teachers are nice to you and leave you an easy day. I thought subbing must be so nice...you get paid decently well, the teachers usually don't leave you a lot to do, and you only have to deal with each class for an hour or so. Sometimes the students can be really rowdy or mean though!
